Keynote: Authentic Leadership and ‘Why Should Anyone Be Led By You?’

Even with a room full of seasoned senior leaders, from any sector, asking a simple question will result in near complete silence and looks of quiet reflection .  The question is; “Why should anyone be led by you?”.  A question that has the power to create a deafening silence. Based on research conducted by Professor Rob Goffee and Gareth Jones the notion of ‘Authentic Leadership’ has been developed to highlight not only what attributes help to establish leadership credentials but also addresses the area of what is it that followers want? The presentation reviews approach to authentic leadership and also what it takes to engage followers.

Keynote: Assessing and improving your organisation’s HSE culture

While an HSE management system is a crucial aspect of the management of safety in organisations, the system will only be successful if people are interested in using and improving it. That interest manifests itself in the HSE culture - the ‘way we do things for HSE around here’. The first step to improving the HSE culture is to recognise what your culture is like now, and to see what better culture looks like. This presentation will describe  a workshop-based tool that can be used to do just that. It offers a way to assess your organisation in terms of how well developed it’s safety culture currently is, and provokes discussions that are the first step towards developing a plan to improve the culture. The world-renowned Understanding your HSE Culture tool, a part of the Hearts and Minds toolkit, has been used in hundreds of organisations in many industries, and has been applied to improve safety culture to improving HSE culture and HSE management for almost twenty years.

Keynote: Building resilient systems

Safety efforts usually aim to eliminate or reduce unacceptable risk and harm. According to this definition, called Safety-I, a system is safe if as few things as possible go wrong. A problem with this approach is that safety management is based on evidence from random snapshots of failed system states. Resilience engineering argues that safety should be viewed differently with emphasis on things that go well. According to this definition, called Safety-II, a system is safe if as much as possible goes well. Safety management and the understanding of safety should be based on a systematic understanding of how performance succeeds, rather than on how it fails. The purpose of safety efforts is similarly to ensure that things go well rather than to prevent them from going badly.
